Virginia Tech Residency: Recital
In November, Guidry’s recital will feature three of his own compositions: 2:19, how to breathe while dying, and the world premiere of a new work. The program will also feature works by Jessie Cox, Olivia Shortt, and Edgar Guzman. All of these works are influenced and informed by the central tenets of Guidry’s practice: radical self love, compassion, laughter, and the importance of amplifying Black and Indigenous art-makers and noise-makers.

Virginia Tech residency: Decolonizing the bassoon lecture
The second lecture will cover Guidry’s process, and his ongoing work of decolonizing the bassoon within his artistic practice. While the bassoon is known for its role as an orchestral instrument, central to Guidry’s artistic practice is an exploration of the bassoon beyond Eurocentric confines. While the masterclass is designed for bassoonists and composers, it is encouraged that anyone who is interested attend. Non-musicians and musicians of all backgrounds should feel welcome to join each of these talks.

These will be explored from the perspective of the player as well as of the notater. EP Release: Darkness is a myth
During the quarantine I had the idea of recording some improvisations for fun and then releasing them later this year for friends and family. This project quickly turned serious and I am so so happy with the finish product. Getting to produce my own EP has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. You can purchase my ep on band camp: https://guidrybassoon.bandcamp.com
Darkness is a Myth, vibrant and versatile performer-composer Clifton Joseph Guidry III’s first self-released EP explores the human-like qualities of the bassoon’s voice through a range of extended techniques including multiphonics, vocalizations as well as thoughtful additions of field recordings and electronics through experimental yet beautifully lyrical storytelling. This album is a representation of how Clifton sees the world on a spectrum of dark and light. This is an album that crosses that spectrum of darkness and lightness and borders between cinematic film score, free jazz and ultimately the listener’s own internal monologue in discussing radical self-love and radical self-care. The recording features Clifton Joseph Guidry III as both composer and performer. All works heard here were composed in 2020: these are their premiere recordings.

The Bassoon in 2020 Online masterclass
In my class this Saturday I will be covering a multitude of extended techniques for bassoon. One of the biggest goals of this course is to show how easy it can be to integrate these techniques into your everyday playing. For example in this video below I use a lot of multiphonics, harmonic improvisation, microtonal pitch bends, and maneuvering through the entire range of bassoon smoothly. combing these techniques has helped me learn how to just shred, and have more performances that allow me to fully express my artistry outside of the western context of the bassoon. I hope to see many of you there this Saturday it's going to a fun time! For composers, if you have any specific questions please send them to cliftonbassoon@gmail.com before the class on Saturday. For bassoonist, if there’s a piece you want to bring to the class please also email the name of the piece and a PDF before the class on Saturday.
